This week I traveled for work, so I went to the fridge to grab some breakfast for the first time in days this morning. The fridge was packed, yet I couldn’t find anything. I didn’t really look very long, because after just a little bit of shifting things around, I realized that I’ve been playing the “out of sight, out of mind” game.
The first thing I did was slam the fridge shut. Then I headed to Costco.
I bought only healthy things, and things I could generally freeze. When I came home with my big box of goodies, I had two choices: Put all of this good new stuff in the basement fridge (where I’ll forget it), or suck it up and gut the primary fridge.
The stuff I got rid of:
- If I didn’t vividly remember buying recently, it was out of there
- Anything unrecognizable, for obvious reasons
- Things with a layer of frost
Yes, I felt pretty guilty about such blatant waste. But then I remembered that there is no way we’ll ever eat it, and it’s only serving to make my life more stressful.
Deep Clean
After the fridge and freezer were gutted, I gave everything a good scrubbing with hot water and Thieves cleaner. That alone made me feel pretty good.
Dinner for Three
In front of me was 13 pounds of veggies I’d purchased. Two five pound bags of organic frozen veggies, and a three pound sack of Brussels sprouts. I grabbed my box of Ziploc quart sized bags and set to work, divvying the corn and beans into bags that would be just about right for dinner for the three of us. Then I stuck those little individual baggies into one “Mother” Zip-loc for easy access and added freezer burn protection. I kept like with like for easy access.

I blanched the Brussels sprouts, and put those in bags for freezing. Repeated with the Asparagus.

Veggies are now directly above the drawer containing individually wrapped chicken breasts and salmon filets, so I’ll be able to swiftly assemble a healthy dinner during the week.
Instant Smoothies
I found an enormous bag of frozen strawberries I’d picked up for smoothies a while ago, as well as some frozen blueberries. I mixed the berries into smaller baggies and chucked in some cut fresh pineapple from today’s Costco run. Now I can make smoothies easily, without having to endure an avalanche of frozen items each time I open the freezer. I’ll throw the baggie of fruit, some Almond milk, honey and Chia seeds into the blender… You get it. But it will be much faster now, and less of a hassle! And we’ll be much more inclined to whip up a healthy treat instead of reaching for junk.

Exhausting, But Rewarding
It’s true that as I washed, chopped, divvied and organized I thought “This is what it must feel like to be Martha Stewart’s prep assistant, minus the frozen food aspect.” Part of the reason I don’t do more with fruits and veggies is that I abhor the prep work required.
The support tools I employed during the day were:
- Loud, energetic music. (The Shins radio station on Spotify today – I highly recommend it!)
- Coffee
- A phone call with a good friend
So yes – I’m kind of zonked out now, but I really feel good about the week ahead. I’m 90% sure that I can totally avoid carryout or pizza delivery this week, which will be a first in quite some time. It’s pretty bad when the delivery guy starts to know you.
Hot Tip!
Have you ever found a science experiment in a Tupperware bowl you spent $20 on? I’m the first to toss out a container if it is one of the disposable variety, but my pretty pastel Tupperware? Can’t do it!
So when I found a container of home made spaghetti sauce well past its prime, I put it in the freezer. Once it was frozen, I took it out, rinsed the outside of the container in hot water, and was able to pop it into the garbage in one cube. It was much more tolerable than scraping and scooping with a clothespin on your nose, I can tell you that.
Now, time to sit down with a book and a glass of wine.
