Days until the Valentine Party

Two years ago, my daughter became very interested in the American Girl dolls. Well, why shouldn’t she? Almost everyone we know has one or two.

They are very nice, arguably amazing in terms of detail and accessories, and have the price tag to prove it. From tiny ice skates and reading glasses to spa chairs and curling irons, it is easy to see how one could be sucked in.

The thought of investing $90 or more (depending on what you want for the doll) on a toy for a five year-old was unconscionable to me. As much as I wanted her to be a part of the rage in her circle of friends, I just couldn’t bring myself to do that. And really, why would I have to?

I was at Target one afternoon when I first laid eyes on the Our Generation Dolls which I lovingly and instantly began referring to as the “Generican Girl Dolls.” At $21.99, and looking an awful lot like the real deal, I had just found my big Christmas win in “Jenny.”

As luck would have it, my mom also bought her a “GG” doll, with a complimentary color scheme.
Drue was overjoyed by her two new dolls, Jenny and Winny, who are best friends. True, they may not be Felicity or Kit, but they can wear the same clothes, and I don’t have to panic or cringe when I see blonde or brunette hair hanging out of my closed car door.

    Winny.

Meet Winny. Hey... Has anyone seen Jenny?

I highly recommend starting out with one of “GGs.” When she gets a little older, and shows more interest and responsibility, we’ll look at starting an American Girl fund.

In the meantime, we’ll read the books and watch the movie.

hahaha! I can’t believe she got a doll named Winny! I hope it isn’t scary looking.

We are a blended family with 1 Generican Girl doll and 1 ‘just like me’ AG doll. Both dolls play together well and are loved all the same.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree–Sienna likes the deals on clothes and accessories from Target, AG outlets and Michael’s. She’s amazed at the prices at the AG store in Chicago but it was fun to take her.
